Who we are – Vance Lab at UC Berkeley

Principal Investigator

Russell Vance obtained his PhD in 2000 under the mentorship of David Raulet at the University of California, Berkeley. He conducted postdoctoral studies in the laboratories of John Mekalanos and Bill Dietrich at Harvard Medical School. He was appointed Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley in 2006, and is currently a Professor and HHMI Investigator.

Research Specialist

Gabriel Mitchell earned his PhD working on Staphylococcus aureus in the Malouin Lab at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada. He completed postdoctoral studies with Dan Portnoy and Jeff Cox at Berkeley, studying Listeria monocytogenes. He then headed an independent Open Innovation research group at Novartis. He brings a wealth of experience to help spearhead new Shigella projects in the lab.
